Unflinching Honesty About Marriage, Motherhood and Mourning

Unflinching Honesty About Marriage, Motherhood and Mourning

And when he got down on one knee with sunflower in hand to propose that we get married, I was never so sure of anything in my life.He always surprised me with sunflowers—in my car, under my pillow, in the blue vase on the table. Whenever I see one now, I go back to the bright summer day when he led me, blindfolded, into a giant field of buttery Kansas sunflowers after taking me home to meet his family. It was one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen, so many at once. He spread a blanket in a clearing on the ground and we lay there, looking up at the tall stalks of yellow leaves overhead in the vast blue sky, knowing that we had found our own special heaven. He would often sing, “You are my sunflower, my only sunflower,” to wake me up in the morning, which annoyed me as often as it made me laugh, but it always filled me with complete love.

Dealing with the insecurities associated with marriage

Still, the deepest part of me worried about being responsible for another human being, much less be married to one and possibly having kids with one. What if it all went wrong, the way so many marriages do? Then what? Worse, what if he left me for another woman, like my father had done to my mother?

Couldn’t we just stay living together? Or better yet, couldn’t we live in separate apartments in the same building? That way, we wouldn’t wear out our relationship. Or, how about a commitment ceremony rather than an official wedding? “Relax, babe,” he said with amusement while holding my chin in place, so I would have to look at him in the eyes without squirming away. “My purpose in life—it’s to love you.”

It's tough dealing with the insecurities associated with marriage

Natural progression – kids!

“You say that now but look at what happens to people. What if it happens to us?”

“Shh…” he would whisper, cutting me off. “I promise I will never leave you. I promise I will never hurt you or cheat on you or lie to you or abandon you or our children.” “What children? You’re pregnant?” I liked it that he laughed at my bad jokes. “The children we are we are going to have,” he said. “I see girls.

Two of them. Maybe we can name one of them Ruth? For some reason, I’ve always felt connected to that name.”

And I felt connected to Mark. He calmed me in the deepest, most settled of ways. And that made all the difference. He wanted to get “properly” married in a church. In a white dress with vows and everything? I thought. Really? We did—we got married in a beautiful, old stone church and held a picnic reception at the Saugerties Lighthouse on the Hudson River.

Next, when he wanted to get started on a family for real, I worried. Me? A mother? I couldn’t imagine being a mother. I didn’t want to be a mother. The thought of it literally terrified me. But just four months later, I was so excited to be pregnant with Nell, and four months after welcoming her to the world, our plan worked. We were pregnant again.

Relationships and marriage can be hard at times

With our second child on the way, it was time to say goodbye to our tiny apartment and city life. We bought a modest house just north of the city, in Yonkers, and moved just two months before Susannah was born. It was hectic and crazy and wonderful. I couldn’t believe how much our love had grown, that there were even deeper layers to the levels. Any honest couple will say the same thing: relationships and marriage can be hard at times, even when you love the person so much you can’t imagine how you lived without them. But it goes way beyond wet towels on the floor or budgeting to replace the cracked driveway. It’s the modern-day problem—two people balancing their careers with home life.

I was lucky to be able to do both by working at home, raising the girls while earning a living in a career that I loved. It wasn’t that Mark didn’t want to leave work at 5:00 pm to make it home in time for dinner, baths, pajamas, and books; it’s that he often had to work later and longer to cover whatever the big news story was of the day, or produce what’s called an enterprise piece, a story that a reporter digs up on his or her own that goes beyond covering events, news conferences, and press releases. He often spent parts of the weekend working from home, too.

An impulse to rush back to the carefree, single life

I’ll admit that it sometimes made me want to run back to my carefree, single life—the one I had before, where I had been free to do what I wanted when I wanted and how I wanted. No husband, no children, no mortgage; and while I was so in love with him and so proud of him and so happy with our lives, I sometimes found myself resenting him for giving me everything I never knew I wanted.

10 Pertinent Questions Answered for Perfect Wedding

Pertinent Questions Answered for Perfect Wedding

The team at Alterkate Weddings have planned and connected couples and suppliers for so many fantastic weddings! As a result, we’ve been asked more questions than we could ever remember. Some of these questions, understandably, come up time and again, so today we’re going to answer 10 of those for you!

1. Do we have to spend thousands to get a perfect wedding?

Some traditionalists may be ever convinced that to achieve perfection in wedding planning, it requires stacks of money. We utterly disagree with this, you can spend what you are comfortable spending. Perfection always varies, just remember you don’t need to try to impress anyone as it is your day. Your wedding budget should not be a strain on your finances and peace of mind.

2. Whats the rules on ‘plus one’ guests?

We admit, navigating this is no easy feat! We say that anyone in your invite list who has a significant other (married/engaged/serious relationship) are top candidates to have plus one guests on the eventful day that you start your happy, married life.

But it’s again down to what you both want! Remember you don’t need to invite anyone! But if you are open to plus ones, Look at venue numbers, cost of food and also if you know the requested plus one.

3. Who pays for bridesmaids/best men?

The short version is, as a couple, you don’t have to pay for anything. Don’t be pressured into thinking otherwise! You may feel it is the right thing to do, however, it is all driven by your budget. Most couples we talk to get a thank you present for their bridesmaids and best men but aren’t able to pay for anything else.

4. Are photographers & videographers necessary?

Some way of capturing your memories and the happiness of the day is essential. A big cliche, which is 100% true, is that the day rushes past like a blur. Talented photographers and videographers capture both the key parts of the day and the smaller moments you miss. If budget is a problem, look at how you can involve your guests with disposable cameras or even ask for those with the newer smartphones to film key moments.

5. Should we set up an open bar?

Tradition dictates that you provide the drink for the first toast that often takes place in or around the speeches. An open bar, however, comes with a lot of considerations.

It isn’t essential to have one and depending on numbers, sometimes we’d advise to avoid an open bar. If you do choose to go for this, keep a fair amount of your budget free so your guests can take advantage!

Should we set up an open bar

6. Do you need a rehearsal?

If you feeling particularly nervous, a rehearsal can be a huge reassurance to you and your partner. Also, a rehearsal can help your best men/bridesmaids be more settled in their role, especially if this is their first wedding.

Whether your ceremony is religious or not, a rehearsal can settle any nerves and allow you one chance to go through the motions of the day and work out the finer timings of the day.

7. What’s the benefit of a wedding planner?

Wedding planners absolutely take the strain when it comes to the organization of your wedding day. Planners, in short, should be experts in creating the ultimate day for you both. They can source and work with all your suppliers to create your perfect day whilst cutting down on your stress. The cost can vary hugely depending on who you use as most planners add the cost of their travel to their packages.

8. How far ahead do I need to plan?

The key point is that there is no limit! You can easily get engaged and not begin planning until a few months after. 12 months is plenty enough time for a couple to plan a full wedding without any help. Any less time and you may begin to struggle when booking a venue, especially if you want to get married on a summer weekend.

If time isn’t a luxury you have, extra help can aid the planning process hugely in the form of parents, friends or a wedding planner.

9. How many people do we invite?

No rules here apart from the need for two witnesses.

You can invite hundreds of people if you have space and the budget.

10. Children or no children?

We’ve saved one of the most debated questions for last. Ultimately, it is your decision. You won’t have to look after any kids on the day but it does add another planning elements to make sure there are child-friendly options on hand for food and drink.

Look at how many children are likely to attend the wedding based on your current guest list. Does it make you worry or are you not phased? The answer to that question will likely help you make a decision.

These wedding planning tips should help you meticulously plan your wedding day and equip you enough to avoid any unforeseen hiccups. Just remember, however you go about it, it is a day about celebrating the love between you and your partner.

Why Hire a Professional Wedding Photographer?

Why Hire a Professional Wedding Photographer?

As technology has allowed cameras to become smaller, easier and more user-friendly, it has become even easier to take a good photo. No longer do we have to stand still for hours to get a single image from an early large format camera. However, when it comes to the day of your wedding, a snap from a smartphone, or even an image captured with an expensive lens and an untrained eye, cannot compare with the thoughtfully curated images captured by a professional wedding photographer.

Why hire a professional?

Professional wedding photographers are not just trained in the art of lighting, composition, and structure; they also easily slip into the role of directors and event managers, without stealing the show. So much work is put into the planning and execution of a wedding ceremony. Professional wedding photographers are expert at capturing the details that fly by quickly, but that we know you will not want to forget. Mother nature gives us a big leg up with natural light photography.

However, it takes years of practice to hone the skill to fully embrace and utilize the natural light to create the highest quality of images.

Weddings are also events in which many generations; families and friends who may have never met each other come together to celebrate. While this is a joyous event, there can also be some interpersonal waters that need to be navigated. A professional photographer is able to decipher when to capture a moment or when to discreetly move into another area.

This high degree of professionalism also really shines for those in your wedding party that may not always enjoy their image being taken. A professional photographer assists all of their clients in feeling comfortable in front of the lens while also guaranteeing the highest quality of images.

Clear expectations

The impact of hiring a professional photographer extends past your wedding day into the editing process. As individuals who create images for a living, providing clients with the highest quality of images in the most reasonable amount of time is a priority for the professional wedding photographer. Wedding photographers aren’t squeezing the edits of your photos into the wee hours in between their day jobs; their priority is making sure that each of their wedding clients feels that they are a priority. Professional wedding photographers also know how to digitally enhance an image without losing it’s natural quality and don’t have to rely on a social media preset to create beautiful images.

Clear expectations from a professional photographer

Keep a friend, hire a photographer

It can be very tempting to hire a friend who dabbles with a camera to document your wedding day. However, going with an established photography company takes the stress out of navigating boundaries during the ceremony with a friend. Professional photographers are adept at knowing when to receive directions and knowing when to give directions, a dance that may be more difficult to navigate with a close friend. Wedding planning can be a series of seemingly overwhelming decisions but hiring a professional wedding photographer, will ensure you beautiful, high-quality photos to share for years to come.
