How do I (20f) tell my boyfriend (25m) that he needs to go to the dentist?

Tldr : my boyfriends teeth are in rough shape and I don’t know how to tell him he needs to see a dentist without hurting his feelings

I have been dating my boyfriend for about 5 months now. Everything is great and he makes me super happy. However his teeth are in rough shape. He broke one of his front teeth playing football in high school and the fake one that they put on it fell off a few years ago I believe because he got in a fight. That’s not the issue. I don’t care if he never gets that fixed I personally think it’s kinda cute. (I know that’s weird)

My problem is that ALL of his teeth are in really bad shape. The bottoms are yellow and the tops are covered in brown spots and build up. He drinks 2-3 energy drinks and smokes about a pack a day. I’m sure he has at least one cavity because he has not been to the dentist in TEN YEARS. On top of all this his tooth brush is really shitty and he does a terrible job brushing his teeth. He literally takes 20 seconds does not floss and doesn’t use mouth wash. Surprisingly his breath doesn’t smell and it’s never been an issue. It’s just the fact that his teeth are in horrible condition and I’m worried he’s going to have to have serious dental work done or have all his teeth pulled if he continues like this.

I grew up pretty well off and my parents taught me excellent dental hygiene. Since I was young I’ve gone to the dentist every six months, had braces and brush and floss twice a day. I have very nice teeth and I take pride in them. My boyfriend did not grow up like this. From what I understand he had a pretty traumatic experience at the dentist when he was younger and he refuses to go back because of this. Part of it I believe is a money thing. While he does have insurance he still has to pay the first 5,000 before anything is covered.

I really care about him and don’t care if his teeth aren’t perfect. I just want him to go to the dentist for health reasons. It has nothing to do with aesthetics. What is the best way possible to tell him that I really think he should see a dentist without him thinking I’m doing it because I think he’s gross?
