Boyfriend (18M) is having a birthday party, I (20F) won't know anyone there. He says it'd be awkward if I went? Should I go?

Boyfriend and I have been together for nearly 6 months after being friends for years. We have a great relationship, communicate openly about things, and have never had an argument of any sort.

His birthday is in about 2 months, and he's planning well in advance due to a lot of his friends going away on holiday around that time (we're long distance so I've never met any of his friends). It's always been a bit up in the air as to whether I'd be going too, but I asked him not long ago and from what he said, there are two scenarios:

1) he only invites his male friends, they're about as 'british teenage lad' group as you can possibly get. If I'm the only girl there it might be weird because we wouldn't have much in common (his words) and he'd just be messing around with them the whole time

2) he invites maybe 4 girls at most, and I still don't know anyone there and it will still be weird, but not as bad since I'll have girls to chat with

His reasoning is that I won't see any of them ever again (neither will he) since we're going to university the month after, so there isn't much point. My view is that, despite me being quite introverted in the past, I definitely appreciate a good party and it's not impossible that I could at least say hi and get along with people and have a good time.

The only reason I'm asking here is because I have never done this before so I don't know what the done thing is in a relationship when your other half knows none of your friends. Would it be awkward if I went and turned into a loner because he'll know everyone and I won't, or because I'm his girlfriend, should I be there because I want to celebrate his birthday and have fun?

TL;DR: I won't know anyone at my boyfriend's party. Would it be awkward or should I go?
