Me [22 M] with my girlfriend [22 F] of almost 2 years, told me she was getting dinner with a friend of hers, was actually eating with her ex

Last night my girlfriend told me she was going out to a nice restaurant with a friend who graduated from our school last year to catch up. She was gone for about 3 hours, which I thought was a long dinner, but dismissed it since I know they were pretty close.

Tonight I was helping her draft an email for something. While we were working on that, she opened her Facebook messages. I couldn't help but notice a message from her ex at the top, which read "thank you for meeting up last night, best of luck..." and then it was cut off. As far as I know, this guy doesn't live close by, and she never mentioned meeting up with him to me.

I did something I'm not proud of. After she left the room, I snooped through the rest of her messages with her ex. They confirmed that they did indeed have dinner last night. She lied to me about who she was meeting up with.

Sorry if the story is choppy, I'm still in shock. I trusted her completely, this is so unlike her.

I have 3 main questions:

  1. Was I wrong to look through her messages given the circumstances?

  2. Why would she do this?

  3. How should I confront her?

tldr; girlfriend told me she was getting dinner with a friend, lied about who it was and turns out it was her ex boyfriend
